The new generation of energy drinks: natural, functional, and ready for the new consumer

The U.S. energy drink market is undergoing a major transformation.

Traditionally associated with strong, highly stimulating formulas, energy drinks are being reformulated to meet the needs of a more conscious consumer who values functionality, health, hydration, and naturalness.

This evolution represents a strategic opportunity for brands aiming to stand out through innovation, clean labels, and distinctive sensory experiences.

A sector in expansion and reinvention

According to Mordor Intelligence, the North American energy drink market is expected to reach USD 25.31 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 3.80%.

This growth is largely driven by a shift in consumer profiles, with more attention given to product composition and the presence of natural, functional ingredients.

Innova Market Insights found that 23% of U.S. and Canadian consumers prefer energy drink that offer additional health benefits, including high-protein options and sugar-related claims—signaling a strong trend toward cleaner, healthier labels.

Additionally, Mintel data shows that 91% of North American energy drink consumers are interested in versions that also offer hydration benefits, such as electrolytes or functional compounds that support physical and mental performance.

New roles for a transforming category

Once limited to workouts or nightlife, energy drinks now find new spaces in work routines, focus, self-care, and emotional support. The convergence with categories like functional beverages, supplements, and nootropics (substances that enhance cognition) has expanded both the applications and expectations for the category.

According to The New Drinking Order report (The Future Laboratory, 2025), demand is growing for beverages with targeted benefits, such as mental clarity, focus, muscle recovery, and relaxation. This paradigm shift is driving the adoption of ingredients like:

  • Adaptogens and cognitive compounds (such as L-theanine, magnesium, and ginseng)
  • Vitamins and natural antioxidants
  • Botanical extracts linked to vitality and balance
  • Fruits rich in naturally occurring vitamin C with high bioavailability

Natural and functional ingredients in the spotlight

Among the ingredients gaining ground in wellness and performance-focused energy drinks, the following stand out:

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis)

Known as the “green jewel of Latin America,” yerba mate is rich in caffeine, polyphenols, and chlorogenic acids, offering a stimulating effect with antioxidant action. Studies show its potential to:

  • Improve alertness and cognition
  • Support weight management and fat burning
  • Provide antioxidant protection and cardiovascular benefits

Its versatile sensory profile—herbaceous in green mate and caramelized in roasted mate—makes it a widely used functional ingredient in teas, RTDs, and wellness-focused energy drinks.

Acerola (Malpighia emarginata)

A tropical fruit with one of the highest natural vitamin C concentrations—up to 30 times higher than oranges. It is also a source of flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and soluble fibers, offering benefits such as:

  • Immune support
  • Antioxidant action
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Improved iron absorption

Research by Uchida et al. (2011) indicates that acerola-derived vitamin C has greater bioavailability than isolated ascorbic acid, enhancing absorption and reducing urinary excretion.

Juçara (Euterpe edulis)

Rich in anthocyanins, juçara is a superfood native to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. Its extract provides highly bioavailable antioxidant compounds with clinically proven effects.

Cardoso et al. (2015) found that juçara pulp consumption reduced cellular lipid peroxidation and increased glutathione peroxidase activity—an enzyme essential for protection against free radicals.

Copetti et al. (2020) also showed that juçara consumption increased time to exhaustion during intense exercise, suggesting benefits for muscle fatigue and positioning it as a natural ally in sports nutrition.

Transparency and trust: the role of botanicals

Despite category growth, skepticism remains regarding the effectiveness of functional beverage claims. A Mintel survey revealed that only 28% of North American consumers believe these products truly deliver on their promises.

In this context, botanical ingredients are key to building trust, especially when they:

  • Are visible or clearly mentioned on the label
  • Have traceable origins and connection to sustainable practices
  • Have clinically proven efficacy
  • Are associated with traditional cultures and ancestral knowledge

Anthocyanins, for example, have a strong sensory and visual appeal (purple and blue pigments) that intuitively communicates antioxidant benefits.

Hydration and energy: convergence on the rise

In the U.S., hydration has become a top priority in consumers’ daily lives. According to Mintel’s Blurring Beverage Boundaries Boosts Hydration Benefits (2025), 39% say they are more attentive to hydration now than a year ago, indicating a consistent movement toward preventive and functional wellness.

This shift is impacting other beverage categories. For instance, 21% of Americans are interested in coffees with hydration claims, showing that the combination of stimulation and replenishment is already appealing in various formats. The same applies to energy drinks, now incorporating electrolytes, vitamins, and botanical compounds with multiple benefits—such as powdered coconut water.

The convergence of energy and hydration reflects a trend toward convenience: consumers want multiple benefits in less time, in a product that fits their routine and delivers a positive sensory experience.

Final considerations

Energy drinks are being reformulated to go far beyond stimulation. The category now overlaps with metabolic health, cognitive performance, emotional well-being, hydration, and sustainability.

Nutrient-rich tropical fruits, botanicals with tradition and clinical studies, and innovative sensory solutions are all part of this new generation of products.

For brands and R&D professionals, the challenge is to unite real functionality, natural appeal, and pleasurable sensory experiences in versatile formats aligned with modern lifestyles.
