DR Flavors & Ingredients is participating in Expoinovação 2026, taking place on September 23 and 24 in Joinville, Santa Catarina. In its 13th edition, the event brings together companies, startups, universities, investors and other stakeholders from the innovation ecosystem in northern Santa Catarina.

DR’s session will be led by Salvelino Nunes, Manager of Research and Advanced Technologies, on September 23 at 5:15 p.m. on Stage 2. In the presentation “Open Innovation as a Competitive Strategy: Connecting Companies, Startups and Universities to Generate Results,” Salvelino will explain how the company builds connections with companies, startups, universities and Science, Technology and Innovation Institutions (ICTs) to seek solutions to real business challenges.

The presentation is part of the Applied Innovation and Case Studies track and will last 30 minutes. Topics will include the process of identifying opportunities, finding and selecting partners, developing pilot projects, and turning these connections into results.

Open innovation is part of a broader strategy at DR. In 2026, the company ranked among Brazil’s 150 Most Innovative Companies for the 11th consecutive year, according to the Valor Innovation Award, organized by Valor Econômico newspaper in partnership with Strategy&, PwC’s strategy consulting business. The ranking considers aspects such as innovation strategy, processes, organization and results.

The company allocates more than 5% of its net revenue to research, development and new technologies. This investment is related to the development of solutions for the food industry, including technologies for sugar reduction, functional ingredients, clean label solutions and advanced encapsulation processes, among others.

For Salvelino, open innovation helps connect these investments with the capabilities and technologies available across the ecosystem.

“Open innovation is part of DR’s positioning and the way we develop technologies and solutions for our customers. We work collaboratively with universities, startups and ICTs and use funding mechanisms such as FINEP, EMBRAPII and the Lei do Bem to enable innovation projects. More than simply establishing contacts, our goal is to build connections that generate knowledge, new solutions and tangible business results,” he says.

For DR, participating in events such as Expoinovação strengthens connections with companies, researchers, entrepreneurs and professionals involved in developing new technologies. Engaging with this ecosystem makes it possible to identify knowledge, capabilities and opportunities that can contribute to strategic projects and the development of new solutions. In this context, open innovation is part of the company’s strategy to strengthen partnerships, accelerate technological development and create value for the business and its customers.

Around 80 people attended, including representatives of organizations, companies and others interested in advancing the ESG agenda, as well as invited experts who shared experiences, best practices and lessons learned related to the topic. Opening the program, DR Flavors & Ingredients’ Supply Chain Director, Julio Van Vossen, welcomed the audience and emphasized the company’s longstanding commitment. “A long-standing company like DR would not be here if sustainability were not one of the pillars of its business,” he said. He was followed by Luciana Homrich, coordinator of the National SDG Movement of Santa Catarina. She gave a brief presentation of the organization, demonstrating, as she put it, how “sustainability gains strength when it stops being an intention.” Founded in 2009, the SDG Movement of Santa Catarina now has more than 2,200 signatories. They include individuals and organizations committed to mobilizing Santa Catarina society to build a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable future. Closing the event, Talita Piccoli Sevegnani, Director of Health Surveillance at the Jaraguá do Sul City Government, shared the public sector’s experience with the SDGs.
