Earth Overshoot Day reinforces the role of companies in building a low-carbon economy

30 de Julho de 2026

DR Flavors & Ingredients invests in decarbonization, circular economy, and environmental efficiency to reduce environmental impacts and strengthen its ESG agenda

On July 30, the world marks Earth Overshoot Day, the date that symbolizes the point at which humanity has consumed all the natural resources the planet is capable of regenerating in a single year. In 2026, the date falls six days later than it did in 2025, a positive sign that governments, companies, and consumers are beginning to adopt more sustainable practices.

For DR Flavors & Ingredients, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of flavors, extracts, and ingredients for the global food and beverage industry, the date underscores the need to make sustainability a core business strategy.

The company has established an ongoing environmental management strategy based on performance indicators, targets, and investments focused on operational efficiency, emissions reduction, and the responsible use of natural resources. Energy and water consumption, as well as waste generation, are monitored monthly and form part of the company’s corporate performance management system, aligning with its strategic objectives.

Among the company’s key achievements is the advancement of its climate management strategy. In 2025, DR earned the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, a recognition awarded to companies that submit their greenhouse gas emissions inventories to independent third-party verification. During the same period, DR reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 26% compared to the previous year, reflecting the company’s ongoing efforts and initiatives to advance a low-carbon economy.

In addition to emissions management, the company invests in projects that combine innovation with environmental efficiency, including the implementation of a photovoltaic heating system, the acquisition of equipment to enhance the environmental safety of its wastewater treatment plant, and the development of initiatives focused on waste reuse and upcycling, such as repurposing fruit peels and other fruit by-products.

The circular economy is also an integral part of this strategy. In 2025, DR significantly reduced the amount of waste sent to landfills, lowering the percentage of landfilled waste from 54% to 34%. This achievement was driven by initiatives such as co-processing, recycling, reverse logistics, and the reuse of industrial waste, as well as the approval of five new sustainable waste management projects, surpassing the target initially established for the period.

These environmental initiatives are complemented by packaging reverse logistics programs and an innovation agenda focused on developing solutions that promote greater resource efficiency and reduce environmental impacts throughout the value chain.

More than a symbolic date, Earth Overshoot Day highlights that building a low-carbon economy depends on coordinated action by society, governments, and the productive sector. For DR Flavors & Ingredients, this commitment is reflected in continuous investment, environmental governance, and innovation as the foundation for balancing growth, competitiveness, and sustainable development.

Retirees return to DR to reconnect with friends, see how the company has evolved, and enjoy the traditional feijoada again

The gathering at the company’s headquarters in Jaraguá do Sul brought together approximately 200 former employees for a day of reunions, shared memories, and a chance to reconnect with the company’s present and future. Some people leave the company when they retire. At DR Flavors & Ingredients, however, that’s not the case. On Thursday morning (August 7), approximately 200 members of the Retirees Club returned to the company’s headquarters in Jaraguá do Sul for a gathering that has become a cherished tradition for those who helped build our history. The gathering began at 11:30 a.m. with a conversation about the company’s present and future. Afterward came the hugs, the laughter, and one of the day’s most anticipated moments: the traditional feijoada served in the company’s restaurant. During the presentation, the retirees learned about the latest developments at DR, including the rebranding carried out last year, which marked the company’s name change from Duas Rodas to DR Flavors & Ingredients. It was an opportunity for the former employees to learn about the direction the company has been taking and to see that, even after retirement, they remain an important part of its journey. But as soon as lunch began, the conversation shifted. From one table to the next, conversations naturally turned back to stories from the old days. They shared memories of everyday life at the company, their early years, colleagues who left a lasting mark, time spent with the founders, Rudolph and Hildegard Hufenüssler, and their sons, Dietrich and Rodolfo Hufenüssler, as well as funny stories and the challenges they experienced together. For many, it was like going back in time for a few hours. That is precisely the purpose of the Retirees Club. Created in 1999, it was established to preserve the connection between the company and those who dedicated part of their lives to helping build it. The initiative began simply: when Dietrich and Rodolfo Hufenüssler decided that retirees should also receive Christmas gift baskets, what started as home deliveries became an opportunity for reunions. Over time, those gatherings grew and eventually gave rise to the Club. Today, the group brings together approximately 250 members, including former employees and their spouses. In addition to the monthly gatherings, the program includes trips, lectures, and other social activities, preserving friendships that began within the company and strengthening the sense of belonging that endures even after retirement. This commitment to people was also recognized in 2025, when the project “Retirees Club – Building Stories, Honoring the Legacy” received the Ser Humano SC Award, presented by ABRH-SC (Brazilian Association of Human Resources – Santa Catarina Chapter), in the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) category. More than preserving memories, the Retirees Club demonstrates that the relationship between DR and its employees does not end on their last day of work. It lives on in the reunions, the conversations, the friendships that span decades, and the certainty that those who helped build the company will always have a place to come back to.
