A study conducted by NielsenIQ shows that the effects of so-called “weight-loss injections” extend beyond the clinical setting and are directly reflected in the financial organization of Brazilian households.

The impact begins with the household budget

Among consumers using GLP-1 injectable medications, 84% report a moderate to significant impact on their monthly household budget. To accommodate the treatment within their household budget, 62.2% say they have reduced or postponed other expenses.

The first categories to be affected are those related to dining out and leisure activities. Going out to bars tops the list, with 62.3% of NielsenIQ respondents citing it as an expense they have cut back on. They are followed by spending on miscellaneous services, cited by 56.6% of respondents, restaurants (54.9%), and leisure activities, which 50% of NielsenIQ respondents say they have cut back on.

This finding is noteworthy because it shows that the impact of GLP-1 medications on the food industry does not necessarily begin at the grocery shelf, but rather with the household budget available for dining experiences and food consumption occasions.

The financial reallocation reaches the supermarket

Although only 16.4% of consumers say they have directly reduced their grocery spending, the composition of their shopping baskets changes significantly.

According to NielsenIQ, alcoholic beverages are the category most frequently deprioritized after the start of treatment. They are followed by indulgent products, non-alcoholic beverages, staple food products, personal care items, and household cleaning products.

This redistribution of spending shows that purchasing decisions become more deliberate and selective. Categories traditionally driven by convenience, impulse, or emotional reward are beginning to compete for space with products perceived as delivering greater nutritional value.

Less candy and traditional snacks, more protein and vegetables

The data collected by NielsenIQ helps illustrate the pace of this transformation.

Among GLP-1 users, 76.9% report reducing or eliminating their consumption of chocolate and candy after starting treatment. For snacks and cookies, that figure rises to 73.4%.

Conversely, foods associated with healthy eating are becoming a larger part of consumers’ daily diets. Increased consumption of animal protein was reported by 84.4% of respondents, while 67.6% said they are purchasing more vegetables.

Part of this shift is driven by the reduction in appetite itself. As overall food intake declines, consumers increasingly prioritize foods that deliver greater nutritional value per serving.

A shift that is still small in scale but enormous in potential

The same study shows that injectable GLP-1 medications are still found in only about 5% of Brazilian households.

At the same time, 26% of consumers say they are interested in using this type of treatment but have not yet started because of its high cost or concerns about potential side effects.

The analysis suggests that the impact of GLP-1 medications on the food industry is likely to grow over the coming years, especially as new treatment options enter the market and access to these therapies expands.
